Founded in 2005, Carbonite, Inc. is the fourth joint venture between David Friend and Jeff Flowers, both well-known Boston-based entrepreneurs. Prior to Carbonite, Dave and Jeff founded Pilot Software, FaxNet Corporation and Sonexis Incorporated.
Management Team
David Friend – Chairman & CEO
David Friend has been a successful technology entrepreneur for over 25 years. After serving as President of ARP Instruments, he co-founded four companies: Sonexis, FaxNet, Pilot Software, and Computer Pictures Corporation. In 2010, David was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Emerging Technology category for the New England Region. He has been featured in USA Today, Tech Capital, The Boston Globe, Mass HiTech, Fortune, Forbes and Tom Peter's best-selling management book, The Pursuit of Wow!
David has been a lecturer at MIT's Sloan School of Management and is an active supporter of music and the arts in Boston. He is a trustee (emeritus) of the New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, and the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.
David holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from Yale University and attended the Princeton University Graduate School of Engineering where he was a David Sarnoff Fellow. He is an avid marathoner, distance cyclist, windsurfer, and hiker.
Anthony Folger – CFO & Treasurer
Folger brings nearly 20 years of finance and operations experience to the position of Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, where he is responsible for the company’s financial strategy and operations.
Folger joined Carbonite from Acronis, where he served as Chief Financial Officer and prior to that, as Acronis’ Corporate Controller. He also brings to Carbonite nearly a decade of accounting and finance expertise from his tenure at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte & Touche. Folger’s experience also includes senior corporate finance positions at technology companies, including Starent Networks, Corp., Habama, Inc. and Marketmax, Inc.
Folger holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Accounting from the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Eric Golin – CTO
Eric Golin has served as Carbonite's chief technology officer since April 2011. From September 2008 to April 2011, he served as our senior
director of server architecture.
Prior to Carbonite, Eric served as chief technology officer and vice president of engineering for Eons, Inc., a social network web portal, where has was responsible for product development and website
operations. Prior to that, Dr. Golin served as chief technology officer for Content Objects, Inc., a peer-to-peer file sharing software company, with responsibility for product
strategy. Prior to that time, Dr. Golin was founder and chief technology officer of Argo Technology, Inc., a desktop search software company, where he led product development. At BroadVision, Inc., Dr Golin served as principal architect, director of
engineering, vice president of worldwide professional services, and chief technology officer.
Dr. Golin holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Computer Science from Brown University.
Danielle Sheer – Vice President and General Counsel
Danielle Sheer is responsible for Carbonite's worldwide legal and human resource affairs, including data security and privacy compliance, management of Carbonite's intellectual property portfolio, international development, technology licensing and negotiation and advising the Company's management and Board of Directors on legal and corporate governance matters.
In 2012, Danielle was named to the Boston Business Journal's "40 under Forty" list of emerging business leaders; honored by the Massachusetts Bar Association and Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as an "Emerging Leader"; and received the "Maverick of the Year" Stevie award for Women in Business.
Prior to joining Carbonite in 2009, Danielle practiced corporate and securities law at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, where she specialized in technology-related corporate matters, private equity financings, public securities offerings and mergers and acquisitions.
Danielle received her J.D. from Georgetown University and B.A. with honors from George Washington University. She serves on the board of directors of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and is a member of The Boston Club.
Swami Kumaresan – EVP, New Ventures
Swami Kumaresan oversees new growth initiatives at Carbonite. Until May 2012, he was responsible for Carbonite's top line and oversaw its customer acquisition and retention activities. Swami joined Carbonite as its fifth employee in 2005 and was the company's VP of Marketing for five years. In 2010, Swami was named to the Boston Business Journal's "40 under 40" list of emerging business leaders. He was also named a Finalist for the Mass Tech Leadership Council's Emerging Executive of the Year award.
Prior to Carbonite, Swami was a consultant at Fletcher Spaght, Inc. (FSI), a strategy consulting firm and venture investor, where he advised technology startups on sales and marketing strategy and also served as an Associate at Fletcher Spaght Ventures. Prior to FSI, Swami was a financial analyst in the technology M&A division of Jeffries & Co (Broadview Int'l).
Swami holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Yale University, has served on the Board of the Yale Club of Boston, and has been a volunteer at Horizons for Homeless Children.
Bill Phelan – EVP, Cloud Backup
Bill Phelan is responsible for Carbonite's core business. Until May 2012 he was SVP, Products and drove product strategy, design, and execution for Carbonite's portfolio of offerings.
With more than 20 years of experience, Bill has designed and led multiple product initiatives for top consumer Internet and software companies. Before Carbonite, he was Group Product Manager at Intuit, in charge of the Intuit Partner Platform and Intuit QuickBase, the number one online database for Web-based business applications. Bill also co-founded Veridiem, an on-demand marketing analytics service (sold to SAS Institute). He has also led product management organizations for Unica Corporation, Quaero Corporation (now part of CGS Systems), and Progress Software.
Bill holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Lehigh University.
Pete Lamson – SVP, Sales and Marketing
Pete Lamson oversees customer acquisition for Carbonite, including direct and channel acquisition strategy and execution for the company’s consumer and SMB lines of business. Pete has 25 years of experience with emerging growth companies, having spent the majority of his career with technology solutions designed for consumers and the global small business community.
Prior to joining Carbonite, Pete served as SVP & GM for NameMedia’s SMB-focused Domain Marketplace, the largest of its kind in the world. Pete also served as Chief Operating Officer of Monster Worldwide’s consumer relocation division, helping small businesses convert new movers into lifetime customers. Pete also co-founded P.D. Circuits, an outsourced electronics manufacturing supply chain management firm.
Pete holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is co-president and board member of the Dover-Sherborn, MA Soccer Club.
Rich Surace – SVP, Customer Services
Rich brings more than 20 years of experience in leading, creating and managing technical support and customer service operations for large organizations including several Fortune 500 companies. Prior to Carbonite, Rich served as Senior Vice President of Operations at PlumChoice where he engineered, built and managed domestic and international service operations. Before PlumChoice, Rich held leadership positions at Accent Call Center Services, Siemens, TAC Worldwide, Stream International Inc., Teleperformance USA and CompUSA.
Rich received his undergraduate degree from Ithaca College and an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland. He is certified in Project Management and is trained in ISO 9001/COPC quality standards. He is a member of the Help Desk Institute (HDI), American Teleservices
Randy Bogue – Vice President of Talent
Randy Bogue joins the Carbonite management team with nearly two decades of experience in recruiting and talent management. He is responsible for the human resources vision and strategies that include talent acquisition, retention, development and enhancing the company’s high performance culture.
Prior to joining Carbonite, Randy was the president and founder of Venator Partners, an executive search and advisory services firm. Since its founding in 1995, Venator Partners completed hundreds of searches for high growth technology companies and provided advisory and training services to improve companies’ ability to attract, assess and retain top talent. He brings a strong entrepreneurial background to the position, having also founded Environmental Homes. Additionally, he held positions at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.
