A new survey conducted by Carbonite and Wakefield Research has found that while small office/home office business owners make big sacrifices for work, they aren’t taking advantage of the resources available to them and having a hard time with the work-life balance!

Still, the cloud-based backup market is incredibly competitive. A growing number of companies now offer cloud backup services through VARs and managed services providers. Carbonite is growing and so are rivals. So what's the next move? The safe bet: A sharper Carbonite focus on database backup to the cloud.

Suits like the one against Carbonite have had a huge effect on the technology industry, according to Danielle Sheer, general counsel and vice president for Carbonite. Citing a recent Boston University study, Sheer said there were half a trillion dollars in losses in 1990 to 2010.

It's no secret why Carbonite and other storage providers are moving deeper into the enterprise marketplace. Despite the fast growth of unstructured data files, such as photos, video, documents and others, databases generally contain more information that is crucial to a business, including client data and financial records, email and payroll.

As of late, Carbonite has made a name for itself by carving out a strong and relevant SMB niche with its cloud backup products. Last year Carbonite zoned in on the SMB with the launch of a dedicated channel program. and later reaffirmed that it planned to turn the dial up on its competitive SMB strategy with the acquisition of enterprise cloud backup firm Zmanda.
