As much as I would like to take credit for influencing Carbonite's decision, I have no doubt there were many other users and reviewers that expressed the same frustration with the slow upload speeds. While this action is long overdue, it is a smart decision and I am impressed that Carbonite acknowledged that my review was influential. It seems rare these days that companies take user feedback seriously, so Carbonite's email was a welcome message.

While this is certainly really amazing from my perspective because an article I wrote led to the change of a publicly traded company’s policies, it’s even more amazing because it means a) Carbonite cares about its customers and making the service better and b) People will not have to feel or deal with the frustrations I experienced when using the service. It’s a winning situation all the way around.

Lamson suggests that the reason that this relative no-brainer is overlooked is that small business owners wear many hats and may simply assume that they are covered without thinking matters through too deeply. Lamson added that SMB inquiries peak just before and after an emergency. His conclusion is that small businesses are getting the message, albeit gradually. “We see at Carbonite that small business backup is the faster growing aspect of our business,” he said.

More than 20 percent complained that backup takes too long. However, according to backup solution provider Carbonite, with the average business taking 16 days to recover data after a disaster, the 10 minutes it would require to set up an online backup solution is a worthy time investment.

When selecting a cloud service provider for a client in the financial services industry, partners should look for companies that implement a variety of administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect against unauthorized access and disclosure of customer data. A SOC 2 or similar report is a good indication that a given service provider has appropriate safeguards in place.
