Suits like the one against Carbonite have had a huge effect on the technology industry, according to Danielle Sheer, general counsel and vice president for Carbonite. Citing a recent Boston University study, Sheer said there were half a trillion dollars in losses in 1990 to 2010.

As of late, Carbonite has made a name for itself by carving out a strong and relevant SMB niche with its cloud backup products. Last year Carbonite zoned in on the SMB with the launch of a dedicated channel program. and later reaffirmed that it planned to turn the dial up on its competitive SMB strategy with the acquisition of enterprise cloud backup firm Zmanda.
