• More Choices, New Features: Introducing our New Business Plans

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jan 13, 2014

Last week, our Brand Director, Ali, shared the details of our site redesign. We hope you’ve had a chance to look around and – more importantly, we hope you like what you see!

Our site was redesigned to assist our customers with all things business continuity; our revamped business plans put the pro in professional and our new server plans serve all your data protection needs. Rest assured, Carbonite still offers the same simple, automatic backup for your personal computer, home office or small business – but we’ve added some great features to ensure that our plans are covering all your bases! As we’ve talked to more and more business owners who are backing up with us, we’ve gotten some important insights into what businesses want and need. And we’ve incorporated that feedback into designing our new plans.

    Check out the details:

    Pro
Starting at $269.99 per year, our HIPAA-compliant Pro plans will back up the financial data, healthcare records and other crucial business files on all of your business’s workstations. See how we stack up against the competition.

    business dashboard
    Server
You can now back up all of your databases and live applications – like Exchange, SQL & Oracle – starting at just $799.99 per year. And just like our Pro plans, our Server options can help your business keep up with HIPAA compliance. Our server plans also boast the fastest speeds around!

    Appliance
Fast backups and restores and minimal downtime in the event of a disaster are two critical pieces to all business continuity plans. With the new Carbonite appliance, images of your business’s servers are saved on-site and in the cloud.

    Sync & Share
Accessing your data is just as important as protecting it and work doesn’t always end when you leave the office. So we’ve added Sync & Share to all of our plans, arming you with the ability to access, edit and share documents with your colleagues and collaborators – even if they aren’t Carbonite customers!

We hope these updates make your life easier when it comes to chosing the right plan for your needs. And if you’re already backing up your business with us, our added features will continue to provide peace of mind, knowing your data protected and your business has the power to stay up and running. Stay tuned because there’s more to come!

  • A New Look and a Better Way to Back up Your Business

    by Ali Aldrich | Jan 09, 2014

From technology to our website (like our new look?!), a lot has changed since we started backing up, back in 2005! But one thing has always remained constant for us: understanding the importance of protecting what matters. We were founded around a dining room table after our CEO’s daughter lost a semester’s worth of work, and our co-founder’s wife lost a laptop full of pictures.

Now we’re helping our customers save so much more than memories and homework. We’re backing up files, folders and servers. We’re helping businesses reduce downtime after a disaster. Over the years, we’ve found that we're able to help our customers by understanding what’s important to them, and offering solutions that are easy, automatic and affordable.

Along with our new site design and new plans is an all new blog! Not only do we have your backup, but we’ve also got your back when it comes to all things business. So stay tuned, because we’ll be sharing tips, tricks and expert advice to keep your small business up-to-date on tech trends.

When it comes to getting your critical files and databases backed up, we understand your business’ need for speed. And we’re excited to announce that Carbonite Server Backup has been tested and proven to be the fastest among leading competitors!

The Tolly Group tested Carbonite Server Backup against Mozy Pro, CrashPlan Pro and SOS Online Backup using a 54.6GB dataset that included multimedia, office documents, compressed archives, web server data and system files and applications.

  • Head Back to School with Backup!

    by Lynnette Nolan | Aug 28, 2013

The end of August sure crept up on us! We can’t believe it’s already time to head back to school! As you fill the backpacks with new laptops, tablets and smartphones, keep these back-to-school tech tips in mind. They take less than 10 minutes, but can save your family hours and dollars down the road:

Cloud Backup:  Backing up to the cloud protects your important files so you can get them back if your computer crashes or is stolen, and with our mobile app files are accessible from the dorm, the campus library and on the go!

Virus Protection: While back-to-school virus protection generally consists of stocking up on tissues and hand sanitizer, the threat of computer viruses shouldn't be ignored. Millions of computer viruses can allow someone to access your data, collect billing information or take control of your computer. These bugs can also slow down your computer and interfere with your programs.

Password Protocol: With many schools relaxing their technology policies, and allowing students to bring devices to school, it's important to make sure your students gadgets are password protected!

Mobile Data Usage: On-the-go internet allows students to remotely access files, quickly look up a fact for a history paper and connect with friends, but checking the data charges on your bill could be enough to send you to the school nurse! Make sure your mobile data plan fits your family’s needs, and don’t forget that connecting to Wi-Fi can help you avoid overage fees.

How do you prep for #back2school? Tweet us at @Carbonite to share your tips!

  • From Cloud Lounge to Cloud Backup: A BlogHer 2013 Recap

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jul 31, 2013

Summer is always a busy time for the Carbonite crew! While our Reseller team is down in Orlando for CompTIA’s ChannleCon, the PR team – and Captain Carbonite – just returned from this year’s amazing BlogHer conference in Chicago!

From tech writers to crafty couponers to multi-tasking moms, we had the opportunity to chat with some amazing conference attendees at our cloud lounge, where they were able to relax, recharge and regroup.

    blogher cloud lounge booth

We loved having the chance to educate an eager audience about backup. And it was so cool for us to hear firsthand how Carbonite had saved people’s business documents, family photos and even manuscripts!

No one was more excited to hear about data disasters averted than Captain Carbonite.

    captain carbonite at blogher

But we also heard some sad stories about baby pictures lost in a hard drive crash and power surges that deleted months of edits to files that weren't backed up. To avoid hearing these tragic tales next year, we gave a complimentary year of Carbonite Home backup to each attendee who visited the cloud lounge!

We can’t wait to follow-up with everyone who dropped a card, or snagged a backup subscription! We’re definitely looking forward to hearing more stories about how the cloud saved the day – and the data.

There were so many awesome keynotes, breakouts, booths and parties! If you didn't have a chance to make it to the cloud lounge we’d still love to hear from you!

  • Database Backup, Carbonite Style

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jul 23, 2013

At Carbonite, we are always looking to wring out cost and complexity from the backup process. Carbonite pioneered simple-to-use and low cost backups for computers, and today we backup laptops, desktops, NAS devices, external hard drives, servers and mobile devices for our 1.5+ million customers. Now, we are bringing simplicity and low-cost to server and database backups as well. With the release of Carbonite Enhanced Server Backup, we are reducing the cost and complexity of server and database backups by an order of magnitude.

With databases always top of mind for small businesses, let’s see what that looks like with our new offering…

A Blurry Image Won’t Do:  Consistent Backup Matters

Taking a snapshot of things that are moving (like your kids running around) is tricky. Your camera contains a lot of sophisticated technology to focus and take a sharp image and turn it into a single JPG file. So, we can simply pickup that file at the file system level, and move it to our cloud storage. When you recover a JPG file, you get the same sharp picture you snapped.

Like your kids running around, databases are always in motion too. Databases represent active data on your servers. Unlike a photo that is just a single file; databases are represented by multiple files and processes that are working together. Taking a file level backup of this data can easily result in a backed up image that does not represent your database at any one particular point-in-time. You may have some records that are partially written out to disk and partially in memory; so multiple files representing the database may not agree with each other in the backup image. Recovering your database from such a blurry image can result in unacceptable results for your business. You need special software to prepare the database and then take its snapshot at a particular point-in-time, i.e., a consistent backup, from which the database can be accurately restored.

Carbonite Enhanced Server Backup ensures consistent backups of your databases. We take a sharp snapshot of your database at the time a backup run is initiated (either as scheduled or on-demand). And, of course, when you restore from this snapshot the database works as expected.

Database Downtime – Not an Option

Whether your database is serving as the backbone of your ecommerce application or an internal application serving employees, its services are expected to be available 24x7. Typically you don’t have the luxury of a downtime window – during which either the database could be stopped entirely or the updates to the database can be paused.

Carbonite Enhanced Server Backup provides hot backup of your databases. In other words, our software does not shut down your database or even stop updates to your database during the backup process.

Complexity: It’s Our Problem, Not Yours

Various underlying methods for taking database backup images have lots of nuances and exceptions. For example, different database types and versions deal with their logs differently (dealing with database logs is a crucial part of taking a sharp snapshot I mentioned above). So, if you rely on a home-grown script, you would need to be on a constant treadmill of making changes to your script every time you deploy a new version of your database software, let alone change the database type completely.

Our engineers are on this constant treadmill for you – always looking out for nuances, exceptions, gotchas and optimization opportunities in the newest versions of database software from multiple vendors. Carbonite hides the complexity of backing up databases behind a very simple to use GUI. You simply tell us: what, where, when and how to back up your databases. We figure out the right process and underlying method to execute it for you.

In a next installment, I’ll dive into the range of configuration settings available with this new offering from Carbonite for our small business customers. In the meantime, if you questions about Enhanced Server Backup and if it’s right for your business, you can contact our Business Team at businessteam@carbonite.com or 855-CARB-BIZ (855-227-2249).

  • Boston Reflections

    by Lynnette Nolan | Apr 22, 2013

It has been a shocking, sad and incredible week here in Boston, Carbonite's hometown.  So many Carbonite employees live in and around downtown and the areas in the news this past week – and we have been so amazed by the outpouring of support we saw from the community – from our customers and industry partners, and from stories we heard on the news and from our own neighbors and loved ones.

The past week was intense and like nothing anyone has really experienced here before. But Boston is a city with a great, vibrant heart and it will recover, and while we are still recovering from a devastating tragedy, we are so overwhelmed by and grateful for the bravery and heroism of the first responders, all of our police and law enforcement agents, and all of our citizens. The spirit and heart of Boston will help us all to heal and bring us through.

In the days that followed the explosions, there were quite a few extra cops in the neighborhood.  I talked to one who was just outside the Prudential Mall near our offices, and he said the increased police presence was simply to make people feel more comfortable. We certainly appreciate their work to keep us safe while the investigation progressed. Today, we are back in our offices at work, as are many other businesses, but we continue to contemplate the pain and suffering of those who lost relatives, children, and friends and those who are in the hospital recovering from grievous and traumatic injuries.

As we know so many people are generously giving to charities to support the Boston Marathon bombing victims, we wanted to share this article from Boston.com with info on how to be sure you are choosing your donation sites carefully. At Carbonite, we are proud to be donating to charitable organization One Fund Boston by matching any donations made by our employees.

At 2:50 pm today, Carbonite will join Governor Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas Menino – along with so many others, for a minute of silence in Boston and across the Commonwealth. We are Boston Strong.

  • Captain Carbonite Drops in from the Cloud and Hits the Streets!

    by Lynnette Nolan | Mar 28, 2013

Last week, Captain Carbonite dropped in to surprise and remind us that he’s got our back(up)!

Today, he’s back on the streets of Boston – in Harvard Square, Government Center and Copley Square  – sharing info about Carbonite and Backup Day, which is this Sunday!

Wondering how one awesome backup superhero can be in three places at once?! It actually makes perfect sense: he’s an advocate for data protection and to be totally secure, data should be kept in more than one place. Even though you may be backing up to disks or external hard drives, a copy should always be stored in the cloud under Captain Carbonite’s watchful eye.

We hope you join Captain Carbonite in his Backup Day celebrations! If you’re not in Boston, you can still participate in the festivities by following us on Twitter and liking us on Facebook. And if you spot the Captain out and about, we’d love to see your pics – don’t forget to use the hashtag #CaptCarbonite!

Data protection isn’t the only way the cloud can help. Small businesses can employ the cloud in a myriad of ways to increase productivity and, best of all, cut IT costs. Some popular cloud applications include: email, CRM, financial software and – of course – backup!

  • Backup by the Numbers

    by Lynnette Nolan | Mar 15, 2013

Today is Pi Day, so we figured we’d crunch some numbers to celebrate. Of course what we’re really celebrating is Backup Day! Our favorite holiday is at the end of the month, but we’ve been reveling ever since March began.

We keep a ton of important data on our computers! From resumes to contacts, photos to music – our real life work and entertainment is stored digitally.

    what-are-we-storing

But, while 82% of Americans say they only keep digital files, 39% of them haven’t backed up in over a year! And 51% of people know the pain of a data disaster.

    51 percent

What would happen if your computer crashed right before the big interview?

Would your Backup Day party invitations still make it out on time if you had to manually track down all of your contacts’ addresses?

You don't have to be a statistician to calcualte that backup is a safe bet!

  • Celebrate the Best Holiday in March with the Better Backup Plan

    by Lynnette Nolan | Mar 07, 2013

Sure St. Patrick's Day and the first day of spring occur in March, but we all know those holidays take a back seat to the greatest day of the calendar year – Backup Day! So while a pot of gold may be at the end of the rainbow, don't forget that data security can be found in the cloud.

To help you celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, we've got some tips to help you ensure your most important files are protected!

    • Protect your data with more than just a disk drive: Computers don’t always have the luck of the Irish – and sometimes a big of bad luck can mean photos that are gone forever. Having digital copies of your pictures is important – but make sure to keep a copy in the cloud.
    • Check your backup: Backing up with Carbonite is virtually effortless – you simply set it and forget it! But it never hurts to double check that your backup contains all the files you want to protect. With Carbonite, checking a file’s status is as easy as looking for the green dot.
    • Test a restore: You've got your backup plan, you know what files are protected and you’re ready for anything! But what if the unthinkable happens and you find yourself in the midst of a crash, theft or natural disaster. Test a file restore before the data is actually gone, and before you need to put your backup plan into action.

Data protection takes diligence, not luck. But when you're armed with the better backup plan and some helpful tips, you're prepared!

  • Dive into Backup!

  • Making Carbonite Currents: Behind the Scenes with Product Manager, Chris

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jan 23, 2013

After working on the Currents project for months, my team and I are excited to finally launch the public beta! In yesterday’s post, Swami explained how Currents can change the way we work. Today, I wanted to give you a little flavor for how the project started and how the team operates:

Last year, we found ourselves asking these questions:

    • How do we adapt the Carbonite experience to a world where people now commonly work on multiple devices?
    • How are people moving their files between devices today? Do existing products meet their needs?
    • Beyond simply having access to their work, what else do people want to do with their files?

The original team consisted of just two developers. They quickly built a prototype that allowed us to test and validate the concept that would eventually become known as Currents - a single, unified view of your recent work across all of your devices. The Currents team continued to iterate on the product, releasing an update every two weeks that was tested and evaluated by a small group of outside users. Over time, we narrowed in on the scope of what we felt would be a compelling product that allowed users to seamlessly work across devices as well as share and collaborate with others.

The team, which now consists of developers, user researchers, visual designers, marketing folks and product managers all sit and work together in an open area designed to encourage collaboration and product development. Our walls are covered with user feedback scrawled on sticky notes so that it is clear to everyone what we are hearing, how people are using the product, and where we need to focus. The Currents beta that launched this week is the culmination of months of user research, testing and development and the team is very excited to get it into the hands of a wide audience.

We encourage you to go try out Currents (download it here) and let us know what you think by sending a note to ccfeedback@carbonite.com. There's a good chance your feedback will end up on a sticky note on our wall and influence the future of a rapidly evolving product.

  • Introducing Currents Beta! A Post by our EVP of New Ventures

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jan 22, 2013

Backing up your computer used to be cumbersome and expensive. Several years ago, when Carbonite was just getting started, we bet that if we made cloud backup simple and affordable, everyone would use it. When we placed that bet seven years ago, all five of us fit in CEO Dave Friend’s home office. And it really paid off: to date we've backed up over 200 billion files, take in about 300 million per day and we've restored over 7 billion files that would have otherwise been lost forever to very happy customers.

The technology world has changed a lot since we started the company. Today, people are creating and consuming more data than ever and doing so across multiple devices and cloud services. We have the freedom to connect, share and collaborate in ways that were hard to imagine just a few years ago.

But, with all this freedom comes complexity and confusion. For example, my files are scattered all over the place (two computers, an iPhone, iPad and Google Drive). I have links in emails to files people have shared with me. I want access to the stuff I’m working on no matter where I am or which device I’m using. Lots of people find themselves in the same situation. Some email stuff to themselves. Others (including me) put stuff in a synced folder (but you have to remember to do that!). And so a lot of time and energy that could be spent on getting work done instead goes into dealing with digital clutter.

My New Ventures team at Carbonite is working to bring order and simplicity to this confusion – just like we did with backup seven years ago. Today I’m excited to announce the launch of Currents (beta). Currents is a free set of apps (for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac) that keep the files you’re currently working on at your fingertips. Currents is our first step in that direction. You can read more to learn how Currents works or you can check it out at Carbonite Labs.

Currents is a list of files that you've created, opened or saved on any of your devices within the last 30 days. The list appears with one click, and the files on the list are kept synced across all your devices. Just work the way you usually work, and Currents will keep track of everything! For example, you can create a PowerPoint presentation at the office, save it and go home, and you'll find it waiting on the Currents list on your home computer (and on your phone or tablet on the way home!).

Currents also makes it really easy to share and collaborate on your files with others. You can control who may view, or edit on any given file with just a couple of clicks. If you share a file and then make changes, the people you share it with will automatically get the newest version. You and your collaborators can exchange comments on files right within the app. And if someone makes a mistake, or you accidentally delete something, no problem because Currents keeps previous versions.

I hope you'll download the free Currents beta on all of the devices you work on and let us know what you think!

  • Insights on Zmanda from SVP of Engineering, Oussama El-Hilali

    by Lynnette Nolan | Dec 04, 2012

Last month, we announced the acquisition of Zmanda. Today, I would like to talk to you about how Zmanda's solutions complement Carbonite's cloud backup offerings and the potential integration can bring to your business.

Small businesses today have ranked their business data as their most valuable asset – even more than their business’ inventory or their physical office, so we all know that backing up is a must. So as more and more small businesses rely on applications to run their daily operations, the need to back up databases is a fundamental requirement in the selection of their backup application. And of course, businesses also need to look at the reliability of the backup and the ability to restore from it at a reasonable speed. In addition to safeguarding critical business information, these needs have made the choice for the right backup application very important but also a bit more complex.

Carbonite's backup solutions offer continuous backup to the cloud with offerings for both Home/Home Office and Business – very well suited for desktops, laptops and mobile devices, and we also have options for NAS devices, external hard drives and Windows Servers. With Carbonite Mobile apps, users can access and browse their backed up data in the cloud using a web browser, and can monitor, share or even restore their backup to other devices.

Zmanda provides a schedule-based backup with options to do full, incremental and differential backup that can be local or to the cloud or both. And this functionality is not limited to the file system, but rather, expands into database backup – key for many small businesses. Competitors who treat databases like files often have complicated restores. But with the choice local or cloud backup, Carbonite offers a significant advantage to our customers.
