• More Choices, New Features: Introducing our New Business Plans

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jan 13, 2014

Last week, our Brand Director, Ali, shared the details of our site redesign. We hope you’ve had a chance to look around and – more importantly, we hope you like what you see!

Our site was redesigned to assist our customers with all things business continuity; our revamped business plans put the pro in professional and our new server plans serve all your data protection needs. Rest assured, Carbonite still offers the same simple, automatic backup for your personal computer, home office or small business – but we’ve added some great features to ensure that our plans are covering all your bases! As we’ve talked to more and more business owners who are backing up with us, we’ve gotten some important insights into what businesses want and need. And we’ve incorporated that feedback into designing our new plans.

    Check out the details:

Starting at $269.99 per year, our HIPAA-compliant Pro plans will back up the financial data, healthcare records and other crucial business files on all of your business’s workstations. See how we stack up against the competition.

    business dashboard
You can now back up all of your databases and live applications – like Exchange, SQL & Oracle – starting at just $799.99 per year. And just like our Pro plans, our Server options can help your business keep up with HIPAA compliance. Our server plans also boast the fastest speeds around!

Fast backups and restores and minimal downtime in the event of a disaster are two critical pieces to all business continuity plans. With the new Carbonite appliance, images of your business’s servers are saved on-site and in the cloud.

    Sync & Share
Accessing your data is just as important as protecting it and work doesn’t always end when you leave the office. So we’ve added Sync & Share to all of our plans, arming you with the ability to access, edit and share documents with your colleagues and collaborators – even if they aren’t Carbonite customers!

We hope these updates make your life easier when it comes to chosing the right plan for your needs. And if you’re already backing up your business with us, our added features will continue to provide peace of mind, knowing your data protected and your business has the power to stay up and running. Stay tuned because there’s more to come!

  • A New Look and a Better Way to Back up Your Business

    by Ali Aldrich | Jan 09, 2014

From technology to our website (like our new look?!), a lot has changed since we started backing up, back in 2005! But one thing has always remained constant for us: understanding the importance of protecting what matters. We were founded around a dining room table after our CEO’s daughter lost a semester’s worth of work, and our co-founder’s wife lost a laptop full of pictures.

Now we’re helping our customers save so much more than memories and homework. We’re backing up files, folders and servers. We’re helping businesses reduce downtime after a disaster. Over the years, we’ve found that we're able to help our customers by understanding what’s important to them, and offering solutions that are easy, automatic and affordable.

Along with our new site design and new plans is an all new blog! Not only do we have your backup, but we’ve also got your back when it comes to all things business. So stay tuned, because we’ll be sharing tips, tricks and expert advice to keep your small business up-to-date on tech trends.

  • Head Back to School with Backup!

    by Lynnette Nolan | Aug 28, 2013

The end of August sure crept up on us! We can’t believe it’s already time to head back to school! As you fill the backpacks with new laptops, tablets and smartphones, keep these back-to-school tech tips in mind. They take less than 10 minutes, but can save your family hours and dollars down the road:

Cloud Backup:  Backing up to the cloud protects your important files so you can get them back if your computer crashes or is stolen, and with our mobile app files are accessible from the dorm, the campus library and on the go!

Virus Protection: While back-to-school virus protection generally consists of stocking up on tissues and hand sanitizer, the threat of computer viruses shouldn't be ignored. Millions of computer viruses can allow someone to access your data, collect billing information or take control of your computer. These bugs can also slow down your computer and interfere with your programs.

Password Protocol: With many schools relaxing their technology policies, and allowing students to bring devices to school, it's important to make sure your students gadgets are password protected!

Mobile Data Usage: On-the-go internet allows students to remotely access files, quickly look up a fact for a history paper and connect with friends, but checking the data charges on your bill could be enough to send you to the school nurse! Make sure your mobile data plan fits your family’s needs, and don’t forget that connecting to Wi-Fi can help you avoid overage fees.

How do you prep for #back2school? Tweet us at @Carbonite to share your tips!

  • Tackle Spring Cleaning

    by Lynnette Nolan | Apr 17, 2013

    Tackle Spring Cleaning

Tax season has wrapped up, which means we’re on to the next daunting task – spring cleaning! But before you start stressing about your to-do list, take a deep breath; we’ve got some tips to help you tackle the digital component of getting your home (and life) organized!

    • Take it "byte-by-byte." Tackle files on your desktop, tablet and smartphone one at a time so you don't feel overwhelmed. And remember, just because you have the storage space on your device doesn't mean you need to keep every photo, document and email. It took a while to create the mess, so it will take some time to organize it. But every bit of cleanup makes a big difference!
    • Tackle those taxes. Tax season is finally over, but the IRS recommends keeping copies of your returns for up to seven years. Cut the clutter by scanning your financials, records and receipts and creating a folder on your computer for each year.
    • A picture’s worth a thousand words. Start by sorting through photos from the past year – delete the blurry images, photos of you with your eyes closed and shots with a finger over the lens, and create an annual "Photos to Print" folder so you can quickly find your favorite shots.
    • Create a VIP club. Make an "Important Files" folder with copies of your car title, passports, mortgage documents, birth certificates and other important records so you can quickly find them when you need them. Back up this folder to the cloud so you can access the contents from another computer, tablet or your smartphone in case you need it when you are away from home.
    • Protect your files. Make sure your files are always safe and secure by backing them up to the cloud. In addition to giving you peace of mind, Carbonite also enables you to remotely access your backed up data even if you misplace the hard copy.

While getting your digital life in order will be a breath of fresh air, we know that spring cleaning consists of more than organizing your files. For help organizing your computer room, home office or any other rooms in your house, check out Carbonite’s Clean Sweeps sweepstakes for a chance to win a free year of the better backup plan and a gift card to Merry Maids!

  • Captain Carbonite Drops in from the Cloud and Hits the Streets!

    by Lynnette Nolan | Mar 28, 2013

Last week, Captain Carbonite dropped in to surprise and remind us that he’s got our back(up)!

Today, he’s back on the streets of Boston – in Harvard Square, Government Center and Copley Square  – sharing info about Carbonite and Backup Day, which is this Sunday!

Wondering how one awesome backup superhero can be in three places at once?! It actually makes perfect sense: he’s an advocate for data protection and to be totally secure, data should be kept in more than one place. Even though you may be backing up to disks or external hard drives, a copy should always be stored in the cloud under Captain Carbonite’s watchful eye.

We hope you join Captain Carbonite in his Backup Day celebrations! If you’re not in Boston, you can still participate in the festivities by following us on Twitter and liking us on Facebook. And if you spot the Captain out and about, we’d love to see your pics – don’t forget to use the hashtag #CaptCarbonite!

  • Backup by the Numbers

    by Lynnette Nolan | Mar 15, 2013

Today is Pi Day, so we figured we’d crunch some numbers to celebrate. Of course what we’re really celebrating is Backup Day! Our favorite holiday is at the end of the month, but we’ve been reveling ever since March began.

We keep a ton of important data on our computers! From resumes to contacts, photos to music – our real life work and entertainment is stored digitally.

But, while 82% of Americans say they only keep digital files, 39% of them haven’t backed up in over a year! And 51% of people know the pain of a data disaster.

    51 percent

What would happen if your computer crashed right before the big interview?

Would your Backup Day party invitations still make it out on time if you had to manually track down all of your contacts’ addresses?

  • A Packing Plan Means Less Travel Trouble!

    by Lynnette Nolan | Dec 17, 2012

We've all heard the saying “it’s the journey, not the destination.” But when it comes to holiday travel, we want that journey to be as easy as possible! We've got you covered with our Anytime Anywhere Access, so we figured we'd share some tips to help you prepare for other facets of your trip... like packing.

There are as many packing styles as there are holiday travelers. But, whether you wait until last minute to throw items in a duffle bag or you meticulously lay things out for weeks, we’re all familiar with that pang of fear that inevitably strikes once we've hit the road.

USA Today compiled 10 tips to help you avoid the wave of panic that washes over you as you wonder if that one item you can’t live without – even for a weekend – made it into your suitcase.

If you’re a jet-setter, make sure your essentials are stored in your carry-on where you can easily access them at any point in your trip. And you can fit more essentials in your carry-on by opting to travel with a tote bag instead of a purse or small laptop carrier. Know you’ll be stuffed into your grandparents’ closet-sized guest room upon arrival? Pack dual-purpose items that take up less space – in your suitcase and at your final destination.

When you’re armed with a packing plan, the journey is a little less daunting. And when you can enjoy being at the destination (with all your essential items), holiday travel can be fun again!

  • Insights on Zmanda from SVP of Engineering, Oussama El-Hilali

    by Lynnette Nolan | Dec 04, 2012

Last month, we announced the acquisition of Zmanda. Today, I would like to talk to you about how Zmanda's solutions complement Carbonite's cloud backup offerings and the potential integration can bring to your business.

Small businesses today have ranked their business data as their most valuable asset – even more than their business’ inventory or their physical office, so we all know that backing up is a must. So as more and more small businesses rely on applications to run their daily operations, the need to back up databases is a fundamental requirement in the selection of their backup application. And of course, businesses also need to look at the reliability of the backup and the ability to restore from it at a reasonable speed. In addition to safeguarding critical business information, these needs have made the choice for the right backup application very important but also a bit more complex.

Carbonite's backup solutions offer continuous backup to the cloud with offerings for both Home/Home Office and Business – very well suited for desktops, laptops and mobile devices, and we also have options for NAS devices, external hard drives and Windows Servers. With Carbonite Mobile apps, users can access and browse their backed up data in the cloud using a web browser, and can monitor, share or even restore their backup to other devices.

Zmanda provides a schedule-based backup with options to do full, incremental and differential backup that can be local or to the cloud or both. And this functionality is not limited to the file system, but rather, expands into database backup – key for many small businesses. Competitors who treat databases like files often have complicated restores. But with the choice local or cloud backup, Carbonite offers a significant advantage to our customers.

In choosing their backup application, one of the problems that many small businesses come across is the ability to backup their file servers, database servers and desktops/laptops using one vendor. Today, this is possible with the combination of Carbonite and Zmanda solutions.

With a common set of monitoring tools the solution can provide ease of management and administration. We invite you to help us design these monitoring tools by sending your thoughts and comments to ZmandaFeedback@carbonite.com.

  • Carbonite's New App Extends Backup Protection to Mobile Devices!

    by Lynnette Nolan | Sep 20, 2012

As phones get smarter and screens get bigger, it’s hard to ignore the power of our mobiles. Our smartphones serve as communication hubs, virtual offices and cameras!

As online backup providers, we know how important it is to make sure the devices we use the most are protected – so we’ve been working hard to increase our mobile app’s capabilities. Our free mobile app has been a popular feature with many of our customers and now it’s available to ALL Android and iPhone users! Equipped with features to help mobile users manage and protect the data stored on their phones, our new free mobile app is a must download!

    • Backup - This feature lets users back up the full resolution photos and videos located on their iOS or Android device securely to the cloud. Carbonite Mobile also archives any photos and videos accidently deleted from the mobile device so the user can download them back to their phone through the app.
    • Device Protection - This feature — available exclusively for Android — allows users to protect their mobile device and personal data in the event of theft or being misplaced by locating, locking, ringing or "destroying" the device.
    • Access - This feature enables users to view the files backed up from each of the devices (mobile, PCs and Macs) that Carbonite protects. For example, a user could access videos on their iPhone from their iPad or Android tablet using the Access feature. • Confused About the Cloud? You're Not Alone [Infographic]

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jul 16, 2012

Do you remember when you got your first computer? Chances are you purchased one to dabble in email, play games, browse the internet (when your phone line was free) and use a word processor. Today, our lives are on our computers, virtually speaking. Our entertainment, financial records, family photos and everything we need to do our jobs are made available to us by a small machine that at times can be quite temperamental. We know we should be protecting ourselves against losing data — whether by theft, hard drive failures, disasters or a simple wayward click of the mouse —but figuring out the best way to protect ourselves can be overwhelming.

The rise of cloud computing has given us many options when it comes to storing and accessing our data, including online backup, syncing and storage. But, backup, syncing and storage are designed to meet different needs. And, as Carbonite found in a recent survey, most Americans are confused by all the cloud offerings that promise to backup, sync or store their data, and only 1/3 understand that backup is the most effective method for protecting data.  So let’s take a look at these services and cut through the cloud confusion.

Online backup automatically makes current and continual copies of your files and stores these copies separate from your computer system in the cloud. With online backup, if anything happens to your original files, you don’t need to worry, because you can restore your content easily. Online backup providers that offer remote access (like Carbonite!) also ensure that all your files can be accessed anytime, anywhere — from a computer, mobile device or tablet.

Storage merely provides space for users to manually select files to save in the cloud, essentially extending your computer storage versus keeping a second copy of your data. Storage providers generally lack automatic service and it can be a cumbersome process to choose each and every file you want to store a copy of. Plus, if you’re away from your computer or your hard drive crashes, you’ll only be able to access those specific files you have manually saved in the cloud.

Syncing copies specific files or folders from your computer to the cloud and to your other devices. They usually offer a small amount of storage – say, 2GBs – for free.  If you need more than that, you may have to pay about $10-20 per month depending on the service, or you’ll likely need to manage your data limits. The files you manually select will be available on your other devices, but the files you haven’t selected– whether due to space limitations or your choice – won’t be available remotely or backed up anywhere.

Why does it matter that consumers understand these options? Fifty-one percent of Americans have experienced a computer crash where they lost everything, and people relying on basic storage and syncing providers aren’t protected against that kind of complete data loss. Online backup is the only way to ensure all your files are backed up, accessible and easily recovered in case the worst does happen.

  • Take it from Thomas Edison - Small Businesses Should Back Up with Carbonite

    by Lynnette Nolan | Apr 27, 2012

Last year, we were alarmed to learn that although almost half (48%) of small to medium-sized businesses had already lost irreplaceable data, 31% of SMBs still weren’t backing up because they believed it was a hassle.

When we set out to create an online backup product for SMBs, we knew we couldn’t develop just any product. We sought to design an innovative product to specifically address the backup requirements, budgets, security and accessibility needs of these businesses – and one they would actually want to use.

That’s why we’re proud that the Edison Awards™ has recognized Carbonite Business with a 2012 Silver award in Innovative Services. It’s truly an honor to be recognized alongside such innovators in the spirit of the great Thomas Edison, who was a driving force behind America’s long history of innovation, creativity and ingenuity in the global economy.

  • World Backup Day Tips from Carbonite - Check Your Backup

    by Lynnette Nolan | Mar 26, 2012

When the digital versions of your photos and documents are the only versions that exist – and 82% of Americans told us they keep only digital versions of their files -  it’s more important than ever to back up the documents and files that are most important to you. So, in honor of World Backup Day on March 31st, we wanted to share a few key backup tips and best practices this week.

Carbonite customers know the importance of backing up, but. it’s also important to  double-check your backup. While Carbonite online backup is automatic, it’s a good backup practice to take a moment to check the backup status of your files and folders to ensure they are included in your backup and protected.

World Backup Day Backup Tip #1: Check Your Backup

For PC users, you can easily determine which files and folders Carbonite is backing up with the colored status dots that appear next to a file or folder as visible on your computer (desktop, folder lists, etc.). These colored status dots show you if a file is backed up, pending back up or not selected for back up. With this patented Carbonite technology, you can easily see the status of your individual files or folders. You can learn more by reading How to Tell What’s Backed Up (Windows) in our online knowledge base.

With the Mac version of Carbonite, you can view the colored status dots through the Carbonite Preferences pane. Again, these dots will show you if a file is backed up, pending back up or not selected for back up. You can learn more by reading How to Tell What’s Backed Up (Mac) in our online knowledge base.

After checking your backup, if you notice any important files have not been backed up with Carbonite’s default backup settings, then you can easily add the files to your backup set. To learn how to add files, read Including Files In Your Backup Set.

Not a Carbonite customer yet? Start your 15-day free trial today!
