  • Protect Your Files From Malware

    by Lynnette Nolan | Oct 08, 2013

By backing up your files, you’ve already taken an important step in protecting your computer – but there are threats beyond data loss that you can prepare for.

Malware (short for malicious software) is software that is developed to disrupt or damage a computer system. It can appear in a number of ways, and can be used to gather private information, delete data or even lock people out of their own files. According to Kaspersky Labs, there are more than 200,000 new malware threats per day!

One such malware, Cryptolocker, has been making the internet rounds over the past several weeks. The software is called “ransomware,” as it encrypts the files on infected computers so users can’t access them. When someone tries to open a file on a computer infected with this malware, they are alerted that they must pay $300 for their files to be unencrypted so they can access them. Deleting the malware or refusing to pay the ransom will leave their files encrypted. Spiceworks has a great overview of the issue
    .

As your trusted partner in data protection, we at Carbonite want to ensure that our customers are aware of these threats and know how to prevent them from infecting their computers and servers. Here are some tips that can help you avoid malware and other types of viruses:

    • Be an email skeptic: Malware is often spread through email links or attachments. Don’t open attachments or click on links from people or companies you’re not familiar with.
    • Free software – too good to be true?: Downloading free software is tempting, but it may include spyware and other malicious content. Only download software from trusted vendors.
    • Down with the pop-ups: Block pop-up windows and don’t click on links or buttons within them.
    • Bump up your browser security: Go into your web browser settings and make sure your security settings are set to medium or higher.
    • Beware of illegal downloads: While it’s tempting to watch a movie that’s still in theatres on your computer, many files shared on illegal file-sharing sites have pieces of malware attached to them.

These are just a few tips that can help you avoid the headaches and other negative effects of malware. Safe (internet) surfing!

  • Head Back to School with Backup!

    by Lynnette Nolan | Aug 28, 2013

The end of August sure crept up on us! We can’t believe it’s already time to head back to school! As you fill the backpacks with new laptops, tablets and smartphones, keep these back-to-school tech tips in mind. They take less than 10 minutes, but can save your family hours and dollars down the road:

Cloud Backup:  Backing up to the cloud protects your important files so you can get them back if your computer crashes or is stolen, and with our mobile app files are accessible from the dorm, the campus library and on the go!

Virus Protection: While back-to-school virus protection generally consists of stocking up on tissues and hand sanitizer, the threat of computer viruses shouldn't be ignored. Millions of computer viruses can allow someone to access your data, collect billing information or take control of your computer. These bugs can also slow down your computer and interfere with your programs.

Password Protocol: With many schools relaxing their technology policies, and allowing students to bring devices to school, it's important to make sure your students gadgets are password protected!

Mobile Data Usage: On-the-go internet allows students to remotely access files, quickly look up a fact for a history paper and connect with friends, but checking the data charges on your bill could be enough to send you to the school nurse! Make sure your mobile data plan fits your family’s needs, and don’t forget that connecting to Wi-Fi can help you avoid overage fees.

How do you prep for #back2school? Tweet us at @Carbonite to share your tips!

  • Ask a Carbonista: How Can I Set Myself Up for Success?

    by Lynnette Nolan | Aug 08, 2013

We can’t believe August is already well underway! As the summer dwindles down and back-to-school preparations commence, take a few minutes before things start getting really crazy to set yourself – or your student – up for success!

With cloud backup, valuable data is protected and accessible from anywhere! That means you can scroll through your backup via your smartphone to access the notes for your big presentation. Or, if your high schooler is begging you to race to their homeroom with the term paper that is sitting on your kitchen table, you can gently remind them that all they have to do is log in to Carbonite from the computer lab and print off another copy.

Sound good? It is! And to make it even better, we have a bunch of great tips to help get you started with Carbonite:

    • During the initial backup process, leave your computer on overnight for a quicker backup, and make sure it’s set to never go to sleep.
    • Download the Carbonite Mobile app (it’s free!) on your iOS and Android devices so you can access your backup on the go and back up the photos and videos on your smartphone and tablet.
    • With Carbonite Home, videos are not automatically selected for backup. If you’d like to include videos in your backup, here are instructions on how to do so.
    • Our US-based customer support team is available via live chat, email or phone and they’re always ready to help!
    • If you work on the go, on multiple devices (and who doesn’t?!), download our free file syncing and sharing tool, Carbonite Currents, which acts as a recent files list across all of your devices.
If you aren't backing up yet, take backup off your to-do list by starting a free trial.
  • From Cloud Lounge to Cloud Backup: A BlogHer 2013 Recap

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jul 31, 2013

Summer is always a busy time for the Carbonite crew! While our Reseller team is down in Orlando for CompTIA’s ChannleCon, the PR team – and Captain Carbonite – just returned from this year’s amazing BlogHer conference in Chicago!

From tech writers to crafty couponers to multi-tasking moms, we had the opportunity to chat with some amazing conference attendees at our cloud lounge, where they were able to relax, recharge and regroup.

    blogher cloud lounge booth

We loved having the chance to educate an eager audience about backup. And it was so cool for us to hear firsthand how Carbonite had saved people’s business documents, family photos and even manuscripts!

No one was more excited to hear about data disasters averted than Captain Carbonite.

    captain carbonite at blogher

But we also heard some sad stories about baby pictures lost in a hard drive crash and power surges that deleted months of edits to files that weren't backed up. To avoid hearing these tragic tales next year, we gave a complimentary year of Carbonite Home backup to each attendee who visited the cloud lounge!

We can’t wait to follow-up with everyone who dropped a card, or snagged a backup subscription! We’re definitely looking forward to hearing more stories about how the cloud saved the day – and the data.

There were so many awesome keynotes, breakouts, booths and parties! If you didn't have a chance to make it to the cloud lounge we’d still love to hear from you!

  • Database Backup, Carbonite Style

    by Lynnette Nolan | Jul 23, 2013

At Carbonite, we are always looking to wring out cost and complexity from the backup process. Carbonite pioneered simple-to-use and low cost backups for computers, and today we backup laptops, desktops, NAS devices, external hard drives, servers and mobile devices for our 1.5+ million customers. Now, we are bringing simplicity and low-cost to server and database backups as well. With the release of Carbonite Enhanced Server Backup, we are reducing the cost and complexity of server and database backups by an order of magnitude.

With databases always top of mind for small businesses, let’s see what that looks like with our new offering…

A Blurry Image Won’t Do:  Consistent Backup Matters

Taking a snapshot of things that are moving (like your kids running around) is tricky. Your camera contains a lot of sophisticated technology to focus and take a sharp image and turn it into a single JPG file. So, we can simply pickup that file at the file system level, and move it to our cloud storage. When you recover a JPG file, you get the same sharp picture you snapped.

Like your kids running around, databases are always in motion too. Databases represent active data on your servers. Unlike a photo that is just a single file; databases are represented by multiple files and processes that are working together. Taking a file level backup of this data can easily result in a backed up image that does not represent your database at any one particular point-in-time. You may have some records that are partially written out to disk and partially in memory; so multiple files representing the database may not agree with each other in the backup image. Recovering your database from such a blurry image can result in unacceptable results for your business. You need special software to prepare the database and then take its snapshot at a particular point-in-time, i.e., a consistent backup, from which the database can be accurately restored.

Carbonite Enhanced Server Backup ensures consistent backups of your databases. We take a sharp snapshot of your database at the time a backup run is initiated (either as scheduled or on-demand). And, of course, when you restore from this snapshot the database works as expected.

Database Downtime – Not an Option

Whether your database is serving as the backbone of your ecommerce application or an internal application serving employees, its services are expected to be available 24x7. Typically you don’t have the luxury of a downtime window – during which either the database could be stopped entirely or the updates to the database can be paused.

Carbonite Enhanced Server Backup provides hot backup of your databases. In other words, our software does not shut down your database or even stop updates to your database during the backup process.

Complexity: It’s Our Problem, Not Yours

Various underlying methods for taking database backup images have lots of nuances and exceptions. For example, different database types and versions deal with their logs differently (dealing with database logs is a crucial part of taking a sharp snapshot I mentioned above). So, if you rely on a home-grown script, you would need to be on a constant treadmill of making changes to your script every time you deploy a new version of your database software, let alone change the database type completely.

Our engineers are on this constant treadmill for you – always looking out for nuances, exceptions, gotchas and optimization opportunities in the newest versions of database software from multiple vendors. Carbonite hides the complexity of backing up databases behind a very simple to use GUI. You simply tell us: what, where, when and how to back up your databases. We figure out the right process and underlying method to execute it for you.

In a next installment, I’ll dive into the range of configuration settings available with this new offering from Carbonite for our small business customers. In the meantime, if you questions about Enhanced Server Backup and if it’s right for your business, you can contact our Business Team at businessteam@carbonite.com or 855-CARB-BIZ (855-227-2249).

  • Cloud Services and the Home Office Work-Life Balance [INFOGRAPHIC]

    by Lynnette Nolan | Apr 24, 2013

Finding a work/life balance is hard. And for small business owners who work from home, there are even more challenges!  In fact, a new survey by Wakefield Research for Carbonite found that nearly half of home-based business owners feel it’s more stressful working for themselves. And this infographic shows us why…

    home-office-work-life-balance-infographic-stressors

From hiding in the bathroom to finishing a project to missing happy hour with friends, small business owners working from home often play hooky from life in order to take care of business. It’s not ideal, but it is understandable, since these leaders are striving to manage everything from time constraints to data loss.

    home-office-work-life-balance-infographic-stressors

But business owners aren’t the only ones affected by the challenges of home offices. As they turn the kitchen table into a video conference table, tensions can arise at home as their partners start to feel the weight of the stress. The top reasons couples argue include: work cluttering other parts of the house (32%), working late takes away from family time (31%), and the inability to separate personal life from professional life (30%).

Despite the challenges, working from home can reduce overhead costs and encourage productivity, especially for small businesses that employ cloud services in their home office.

The cloud may not be able to quiet your toddler’s tantrum while you’re on a client call, but backup certainly comes in handy if your kids accidentally delete an important file from your desktop while you’re squatting in the basement trying work in peace!

  • Boston Reflections

    by Lynnette Nolan | Apr 22, 2013

It has been a shocking, sad and incredible week here in Boston, Carbonite's hometown.  So many Carbonite employees live in and around downtown and the areas in the news this past week – and we have been so amazed by the outpouring of support we saw from the community – from our customers and industry partners, and from stories we heard on the news and from our own neighbors and loved ones.

The past week was intense and like nothing anyone has really experienced here before. But Boston is a city with a great, vibrant heart and it will recover, and while we are still recovering from a devastating tragedy, we are so overwhelmed by and grateful for the bravery and heroism of the first responders, all of our police and law enforcement agents, and all of our citizens. The spirit and heart of Boston will help us all to heal and bring us through.

In the days that followed the explosions, there were quite a few extra cops in the neighborhood.  I talked to one who was just outside the Prudential Mall near our offices, and he said the increased police presence was simply to make people feel more comfortable. We certainly appreciate their work to keep us safe while the investigation progressed. Today, we are back in our offices at work, as are many other businesses, but we continue to contemplate the pain and suffering of those who lost relatives, children, and friends and those who are in the hospital recovering from grievous and traumatic injuries.

As we know so many people are generously giving to charities to support the Boston Marathon bombing victims, we wanted to share this article from Boston.com with info on how to be sure you are choosing your donation sites carefully. At Carbonite, we are proud to be donating to charitable organization One Fund Boston by matching any donations made by our employees.

At 2:50 pm today, Carbonite will join Governor Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas Menino – along with so many others, for a minute of silence in Boston and across the Commonwealth. We are Boston Strong.

  • Tackle Spring Cleaning

    by Lynnette Nolan | Apr 17, 2013

    Tackle Spring Cleaning

Tax season has wrapped up, which means we’re on to the next daunting task – spring cleaning! But before you start stressing about your to-do list, take a deep breath; we’ve got some tips to help you tackle the digital component of getting your home (and life) organized!

    • Take it "byte-by-byte." Tackle files on your desktop, tablet and smartphone one at a time so you don't feel overwhelmed. And remember, just because you have the storage space on your device doesn't mean you need to keep every photo, document and email. It took a while to create the mess, so it will take some time to organize it. But every bit of cleanup makes a big difference!
    • Tackle those taxes. Tax season is finally over, but the IRS recommends keeping copies of your returns for up to seven years. Cut the clutter by scanning your financials, records and receipts and creating a folder on your computer for each year.
    • A picture’s worth a thousand words. Start by sorting through photos from the past year – delete the blurry images, photos of you with your eyes closed and shots with a finger over the lens, and create an annual "Photos to Print" folder so you can quickly find your favorite shots.
    • Create a VIP club. Make an "Important Files" folder with copies of your car title, passports, mortgage documents, birth certificates and other important records so you can quickly find them when you need them. Back up this folder to the cloud so you can access the contents from another computer, tablet or your smartphone in case you need it when you are away from home.
    • Protect your files. Make sure your files are always safe and secure by backing them up to the cloud. In addition to giving you peace of mind, Carbonite also enables you to remotely access your backed up data even if you misplace the hard copy.

While getting your digital life in order will be a breath of fresh air, we know that spring cleaning consists of more than organizing your files. For help organizing your computer room, home office or any other rooms in your house, check out Carbonite’s Clean Sweeps sweepstakes for a chance to win a free year of the better backup plan and a gift card to Merry Maids!

  • Ask a Carbonista: How Can I Ensure My Tax Files are Backed Up?

    by Lynnette Nolan | Apr 04, 2013

Whether you’re a self-employed small business owner, head of household or an individual filer, tax season can be stressful – especially if you’re waiting until the deadline. And, as if compiling and filling out forms wasn’t stressful enough, there’s the chance that something could go awry with your tax preparation software or your computer!

    taxes tweet

So while you’re scrambling around your home office looking for your W2s, 1099s, business income statements and receipts, we’ve got your back(up). Here are some tips to take the stress out of tax season:

    • Digitize your documents – Scan copies of your financials, records and receipts. When you create a copy of physical files and upload them to your computer, you have access to the data you need even if you misplace the hard copy.
    • Organize your files – Creating folders for each tax year makes it easy for you to refer to prior returns should you need to look back.
    • Back up to the cloud – Not only are you safeguarding your financial records and the work you’ve done preparing your returns, but backing up your documents to the cloud ensures that even when April 15th is far behind you, your 2013 tax returns are still safe and only a few clicks away – which can be valuable, since the IRS requires you to hang on to tax records for up to seven years!

During tax season, making the best of your backup means backing up all those tax documents! Start safeguarding today with a free trial of Carbonite Home or Business.
