Access your backed up files from anywhere

Over the weekend we launched Remote Access — an application that lets you access and download your backed up files from any computer with a web browser. This is an application that I have wanted personally for a long time. Last year I was on a business trip to Hong Kong and discovered that a Powerpoint presentation I had put together for one of my meetings had not gotten transferred to my laptop. Luckily, I was able to use the alpha version of Remote Access to download the presentation from the backup of my office desktop computer. What a life-saver!

The new feature is accessible to all Carbonite users from our home page. Just click the new "Remote Access" tab in the upper right corner of the screen. Once you enter your email address and password, you can navigate through your backed up files and instantly download any of them.

Dave,

I like the remote back-up!

How is Carbonite doing on the oft- mentioned business version of your retail product? I support a small portion of a huge corporation's assets and have been a Carbonite user (on two systems- personal and business) since last year. Thus far the experience, except for problems getting tech response, has been good. We are looking at Carbonite for some of our District Manager/ support road warriors and perhaps in our several hundred free-standing computers scattered around the country. We also have 5-6 small LAN's here and there, but are looking at Amazon's S3 solution integrated into our proprietary software for them.

I recently read how Mozy will burn DVD's of backups for a fee. This strikes me as a really good option... would Carbonite consider the same?

I'm bummed that when I click on Remote Access it doesn't show anything, but my backups have been complete for a while now. (( sad ))

Hi Matt,

By "doesn't show anything", do you mean that you get an entirely blank screen, or that you see some folders but not the files, or do you mean that you get some kind of messaging or other indication that nothing is there?

Also, do you manage your own private encrpytion key, or do you let Carbonite manage your encryption? Are you sure you're using the same e-mail address under which you've subscribed to Carbonite when logging in? (I've run into a case where someone had an old trial on a different e-mail address and used that e-mail address instead of the one for his current backup.)

I'll be happy to have someone reach out to you to assist if you'd like; let me know.

Sincerely,

Len Pallazola
