Seasoned Leadership.

Founded in 2005, Carbonite, Inc. is the fourth joint venture between David Friend and Jeff Flowers, both well-known Boston-based entrepreneurs. Prior to Carbonite, Dave and Jeff founded Pilot Software, FaxNet Corporation and Sonexis Incorporated.

Management Team

David Friend – Chairman & CEO

David Friend has been a successful technology entrepreneur for over 25 years. After serving as President of ARP Instruments, he co-founded four companies: Sonexis, FaxNet, Pilot Software, and Computer Pictures Corporation. In 2010, David was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Emerging Technology category for the New England Region. He has been featured in USA Today, Tech Capital, The Boston Globe, Mass HiTech, Fortune, Forbes and Tom Peter's best-selling management book, The Pursuit of Wow!

David has been a lecturer at MIT's Sloan School of Management and is an active supporter of music and the arts in Boston. He is a trustee (emeritus) of the New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, and the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.

David holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from Yale University and attended the Princeton University Graduate School of Engineering where he was a David Sarnoff Fellow. He is an avid marathoner, distance cyclist, windsurfer, and hiker.

Jeff Flowers – Chief Architect

Jeff Flowers is a seasoned technology executive with deep IT and technical expertise. Jeff has worked with David Friend (CEO) since 1982 and co-founded Sonexis, FaxNet and Pilot Software. At Sonexis and FaxNet, he also served as CTO. In 2009, he was named CTO of the Year by the Mass Technology Leadership Council.

In addition to the three companies he co-founded with David, Jeff served as VP of Engineering for Computer Pictures. He also served as VP of Development at ON Technology Corporation, a software vendor that provided groupware and utility products for Apple and Novell Netware operating environments. During Jeff's tenure, ON Technology completed its IPO.

Jeff holds a B.S. and M.S. in Information and Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology and attended the Northeastern University School of Business.

Andrew Keenan – CFO

Andrew Keenan brings more than 25 years experience in finance and operations to Carbonite and has led the company through its rapid growth since early 2007. Andrew has had extensive experience in managing fast growth companies both domestically and internationally throughout his career.

Prior to Carbonite, Keenan served as the CFO of Vovici, a survey software company. Before Vovici, he was CFO of Silver Oak Partners where he helped orchestrate it sale to CGI, a $5B public company.

Before Silver Oak, Keenan was Corporate Controller of Synchronicity Software, a global software and service provider. While at Synchronicity, he prepared the company for its IPO before ultimately helping sell the company to MatrixOne.

Keenan also held Corporate Controller and other senior financial positions at Provant and Systemsoft where he completed their IPOs and a secondary offering, managed all financial functions during dramatic growth as public companies and completed over 25 acquisitions.

Keenan earned a BS in accounting from Bentley College and practiced as a Certified Public Accountant with Deloitte's technology practice for 5 years where he was involved with 3 successful IPOs.

Eric Golin – CTO

Eric Golin has served as Carbonite's chief technology officer since April 2011. From September 2008 to April 2011, he served as our senior director of server architecture.

Prior to Carbonite, Eric served as chief technology officer and vice president of engineering for Eons, Inc., a social network web portal, where has was responsible for product development and website operations. Prior to that, Dr. Golin served as chief technology officer for Content Objects, Inc., a peer-to-peer file sharing software company, with responsibility for product strategy. Prior to that time, Dr. Golin was founder and chief technology officer of Argo Technology, Inc., a desktop search software company, where he led product development. At BroadVision, Inc., Dr Golin served as principal architect, director of engineering, vice president of worldwide professional services, and chief technology officer.

Dr. Golin holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Computer Science from Brown University.

Swami Kumaresan – EVP, Sales and Marketing

Swami Kumaresan is responsible for Carbonite's top line and oversees customer acquisition and retention activities for its Consumer and Small Business groups. Swami joined Carbonite as its fifth employee in 2005 and was the company's VP of Marketing for five years. In 2010, Swami was named to the Boston Business Journal's "40 under 40" list of emerging business leaders. He was also named a Finalist for the Mass Tech Leadership Council's Emerging Executive of the Year award.

Prior to Carbonite, Swami was a consultant at Fletcher Spaght, Inc. (FSI), a strategy consulting firm and venture investor, where he advised technology startups on sales and marketing strategy and also served as an Associate at Fletcher Spaght Ventures. Prior to FSI, Swami was a financial analyst in the technology M&A division of Jeffries & Co (Broadview Int'l).

Swami holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Yale University, has served on the Board of the Yale Club of Boston, and has been a volunteer at Horizons for Homeless Children.

Pete Lamson – SVP, Small Business

Pete Lamson oversees Carbonite's Small Business Group, principally focused on small business customer acquisition & retention. Pete has 25 years of experience with emerging growth companies, having spent the majority of his career on technology solutions for the global small business community.

Prior to joining Carbonite Pete served as SVP & GM for NameMedia's SMB-focused Domain Marketplace, the largest of its kind in the world. Pete also served as Chief Operating Officer of Monster Worldwide's consumer relocation division, helping small businesses convert new movers into lifetime customers. Pete also co-founded P.D. Circuits, an outsourced electronics manufacturing supply chain management firm.

Pete holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He serves on the Sherborn, Massachusetts Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors of the Dover Sherborn Soccer Club.

Oussama El-Hilali – SVP, Engineering

Oussama El-Hilali joined as our senior vice president of engineering in September 2011. From September 2005 to August 2011, he served as Vice President at Symantec for NetBackup™ Engineering, where he managed the development, maintenance and release of the various products in the NetBackup product line.

Prior to that, Mr. El-Hilali was Director of Product Management at Veritas from May 2001 to September 2005, where he helped enhance the company's data management products through product definition based on customer and partner interaction and technology acquisitions. Mr. El-Hilali has also held senior consulting and software development roles at companies including Keane, Object Systems and Sanofi Diagnostics Pasteur and he is the co-author of "Digital Data Integrity: The Evolution from Passive Protection to Active Management."

Mr. El-Hilali holds a Master of Science degree in Software Engineering from the University of Saint Thomas in Minnesota and a B.A. in Computer Science and Mathematics from Ripon College in Wisconsin.

Tom Murray – SVP, Marketing

Tom is responsible for leading Carbonite's marketing efforts across its lines of business. With more than 17 years of experience, Tom has helped build strong brands and marketing organizations in the consumer electronics and consumer packaged goods industries.

Prior to joining Carbonite, Tom most-recently served as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Product Management for TomTom, Inc. Before that, Tom held marketing leadership positions at Procter & Gamble, The Gillette Company, and Duracell.

Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Fairfield University, and attended the University of Connecticut Graduate School of Business.

Bill Phelan – SVP, Products

Bill Phelan is responsible for driving product strategy, design, and execution for Carbonite's portfolio of offerings.

With more than 20 years of experience, Bill has designed and led multiple product initiatives for top consumer Internet and software companies. Before Carbonite, he was Group Product Manager at Intuit, in charge of the Intuit Partner Platform and Intuit QuickBase, the number one online database for Web-based business applications. Bill also co-founded Veridiem, an on-demand marketing analytics service (sold to SAS Institute). He has also led product management organizations for Unica Corporation, Quaero Corporation (now part of CGS Systems), and Progress Software.

Bill holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Lehigh University.

Danielle Sheer – General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Danielle Sheer is our General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and compliance officer. She is responsible for Carbonite’s legal affairs, including data security and privacy compliance, management of Carbonite’s intellectual property portfolio, international development, technology licensing and contract negotiation and advising the Company’s management and Board of Directors on legal and corporate governance matters.

Prior to joining Carbonite in 2009, Danielle practiced corporate and securities law at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, where she specialized in technology-related corporate matters, private equity financings, public securities offerings and mergers and acquisitions.

Danielle received her J.D. from Georgetown University and B.A. with honors from George Washington University.

Rich Surace – SVP, Customer Service

Rich brings more than 20 years of experience in leading, creating and managing technical support and customer service operations for large organizations including several Fortune 500 companies. Prior to Carbonite, Rich served as Senior Vice President of Operations at PlumChoice where he engineered, built and managed domestic and international service operations. Before PlumChoice, Rich held leadership positions at Accent Call Center Services, Siemens, TAC Worldwide, Stream International Inc., Teleperformance USA and CompUSA.

Rich received his undergraduate degree from Ithaca College and an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland. He is certified in Project Management and is trained in ISO 9001/COPC quality standards. He is a member of the Help Desk Institute (HDI), American Teleservices

Board of Directors

Gary Hromadko

Gary Hromadko has been a private venture capital investor for over 10 years and joined Crosslink in 2002 to focus on investments in the communication services & infrastructure sector. He also sits on the Board of Equinix (NASDQ: EQIX) and his previous investments include Packeteer (NASDAQ: PKTR), Netcode (acquired by Netscape), Medior (acquired by America Online), Yipes (acquired by Reliance Communications), and OpSource. Before Crosslink, Gary was a partner with Merrill, Pickard, Anderson & Eyre, an early stage technology venture capital firm. He was also a partner at Robertson, Stephens & Co., where he focused on equity research in the software sector. Gary began his investment career in public market investing at Dodge & Cox.

Gary holds a B.A. from Carleton College and an M.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Charles Kane

Charles Kane is a seasoned public company executive and director. Mr. Kane has served as president and CEO of Corechange, an enterprise software company; as CFO of Global BPO Services Corp., RSA Security, Aspen Technology, and Informix Software; and in other financial management roles with Stratus Computer, Prime Computer, and Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Since November of 2006, Mr. Kane has served as a Board member and audit committee chairman of Progress Software. He has served in the same capacity for Demandware since May 2010. Previously, Mr. Kane served as a member of the Board of Borland Software, Netezza, and Applix.

Mr. Kane holds a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame, an M.B.A. in International Finance from Babson College, and is a senior lecturer of International Finance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management.

Todd Krasnow

Todd Krasnow is an accomplished entrepreneur, consumer sales & marketing executive and early stage venture investor. Currently at Highland Capital Partners, Todd serves as a Director on the Boards of several privately-held companies including Quraz, OnForce, and C & S Wholesale Grocers, and is a member of the Board of Advisors at Harvard Business School's Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship.

Previously, Todd was a member of the original management team at Staples and served as its EVP of Sales and Marketing. During his tenure at Staples, Todd won a gold "Clio" award for the best retail advertising in the United States while the company reached over $7 billion in sales.

He holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and an A.B. in Chemistry from Cornell University.

Bill Nelson

Bill Nelson has served as the CEO of several software companies over the past 20 years, most recently as Chairman and CEO of Geac. Under Bill's direction, Geac grew from a small hardware manufacturer to the largest software company in Canada with revenues of approximately CDN $1B. Prior to Geac, Bill was President & CEO of On-Line Software (NYSE), President & COO of Pansophic Systems (NYSE), and CEO of Pilot Software.

Bill was a member of the White House Conference Task Force for Information Services of the National Commission of Libraries and Information Sciences during the Carter administration. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the National Association Of Business Economists and a board member of ADAPSO (a software industry association). Recently, Bill has served on the Boards of several public and private companies including Manugistics (NASDAQ), Geac (NASDAQ and TSE), Catalyst International (NASDAQ), HealthGate Data (NASDAQ) and RTI, Inc.

Bill holds a B.A. in Chemistry from Swarthmore College, an M.B.A. in Finance from the Wharton School, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Rice University. Earlier in his career, Bill was a National Science Foundation Fellow in Economics, an Assistant Professor of Economics at Washington University and has taught economics and finance at both the University of Texas and the University of Missouri.

Pravin Vazirani

Pravin Vazirani joined Menlo Ventures in 2001. He began his career at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he designed digital receivers for satellite communications. Later he worked as an engineer for Pacific Communication Sciences, Inc. and as a product manager for ADC Telecommunications in their Wireless Systems Group. Most recently, he evaluated investment opportunities for @Ventures, the venture capital subsidiary of CMGI. Pravin represents Menlo Ventures on the boards of Carbonite, Credant Technologies, Like.com and Sepaton. He is also involved with the firm's investments in Centrality Communications, newScale and Q1 Labs.

Pravin is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering) and the Harvard University Graduate School of Business (M.B.A.).
