From hackers to hurricanes,
we’ve got your backup covered.
Unlike a backup to an external hard drive, flash drive or other media, Carbonite transmits your backup offsite, to one of our state-of-the-art data centers – where it’s safe from theft, fire, spills, power spikes, power outages, physical accidents and just about anything else that can happen in your office.
Secure transmission with business-grade encryption
Carbonite encrypts your files before they leave your computer, with 128-bit Blowfish encryption, and then transmits them over a secure socket layer (SSL) connection. This is the same data security technology used to protect online banking and e-commerce transactions.
Secure storage at our data centers
Your files remain encrypted at our data centers, where we store them on enterprise-grade redundant disk arrays (RAIDs) that are immeasurably more reliable than an internal or external hard drive. Security and protective measures at our data center include:
- Temperature control
- Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
- On-site emergency backup generators with guaranteed fuel contracts
- Tightly restricted personnel access using biometric scanners
- Server access controlled with electronic key cards and PIN codes
- Guards on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

Security FAQs:
Do Carbonite data centers undergo security and access control audits (formerly known as a "SAS 70" audit)?
Yes. Carbonite requires that each of its data centers is subject to an independent audit of its security and access procedures. These audits are conducted by independent CPA firms following internationally recognized procedures established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Formerly known as "SAS 70’s", these audits provide assurance that each data center has a system of controls in place that are designed and operating effectively. Carbonite backup systems are hosted in top-tier, 3rd party data centers. These data centers are specialized facilities designed for hosting computer hardware and feature high levels of security and redundancy. Additional information regarding Carbonite's Data Security Practices can be found in our data security white paper.
Can Carbonite employees see my backed up files?
Access to your backed up files is protected by your encryption key which is kept strictly confidential. A limited number of Carbonite employees are able to access backed up files in order to assist with data recovery if needed. However, they will do so only after obtaining your consent.
