What's more fun than dealing with ransomware? IT pros sound off

"Unclog a toilet with my hands."
"Eat gravel."
"Sweep the floor with a toothbrush."

Sure, those activities may sound like pure torture. But they're far more appealing than dealing with a file-encrypting and time-consuming ransomware attack, according to the results of a new survey.

IT industry networking and research firm Spiceworks surveyed 156 IT professionals at midsize companies with 100-499 employees and learned that 26% experienced a ransomware attack in 2016. Most were able to remove the virus and recover clean versions of their data from backup.

What would you rather do?
The majority of the organizations emerged from the ransomware incidents unscathed, thanks to the IT pros who work for them. But those IT pros would have rather spent their time doing just about anything else. When asked what they'd rather do with their time, responses ran the gamut from mundane to completely absurd. They included:

  • "Rebuild the network from scratch."
  • "Change a user's name because they got married."
  • "Tell someone to turn it off and on again for the 50th time."
  • "Eat a live hand grenade."

The results of the new Spiceworks survey are included in our new eBook, "A Portrait of the IT Professional." Click on the image below to download the eBook now:
