At Carbonite, our business and reputation depend on keeping your data safely and securely backed up to the cloud. Carbonite uses state-of-the-art technology, highly secured datacenter facilities and industry-leading operating procedures to ensure that your files remain completely private and secure.

World-class network security and encryption
Carbonite protects against physical and internet-based attacks with the highest levels of security. We encrypt your files before they leave your computer and then they are encrypted again while in transit to one of our data centers. Once your data is in our data centers, it stays encrypted and is stored across a redundant array of enterprise-grade disk drives.

To ensure the utmost in security, Carbonite employs the same technology used in online banking transactions. This includes time-tested technologies like Blowfish and Triple DES encryption. Additionally, 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology provides an additional level of security during the data transmission process. To further protect our customer’s data, encryption keys are never stored with customer data. Carbonite never receives or stores unencrypted files.

Datacenter security
When you back up files with Carbonite, they’ll be housed in our state-of-the-art data centers, which are guarded 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Access to our datacenters is controlled by a combination of biometric scanners and electronic key cards. Security staff has direct view of all exits, preventing physical theft of equipment or media. And all activity is continuously monitored through closed-circuit television. Some of the other steps we take to keep your data safe and accessible include:

  • Temperature control
  • Uninterruptable power supplies
  • On-site emergency backup generators with guaranteed fuel contracts
  • Server access controlled with electronic key cards and PIN codes
  • Guards on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
