Carbonite acquires MailStore: A quick introduction to MailStore Server

Carbonite is expanding its horizons. With its acquisition of German software firm MailStore last December, Carbonite now offers a complete email archiving solution that complements its already well-known cloud and hybrid backup solutions for small-to-midsize businesses (SMBs).

I recently caught up with Christopher Wey, Carbonite’s Vice President of Corporate Development, to talk about MailStore’s flagship product, MailStore Server, and how it fits in with Carbonite’s existing portfolio. Wey explained why it’s important for businesses to have both email archiving and backup in their software arsenal. He also revealed what’s next for MailStore. Here are some excerpts from that conversation:

What exactly is MailStore Server?
Christopher Wey: MailStore Server is an email archiving product for small-to-midsize businesses. It combines a sophisticated archiving technology that can easily manage huge volumes of data with a solution design that is fitted to the needs of SMBs. It is low maintenance, easy to set up and affordable. MailStore Server is used by over 25,000 organizations in 100 countries.

What are some of the reasons why SMBs would want to use an email archiving product like MailStore Server?
Wey: There are different types of reasons why you would archive your email. Some customers archive for regulatory compliance reasons. They need to keep a record of emails for a certain period of time to adhere to various regulatory compliance mandates. Another reason is all about reducing the storage requirements for the email server. As people start sending pictures, PowerPoints and other files around the office, email servers can get really large. Email archiving allows you to put older stuff into an archive and manage the most recent emails as your primary mailbox. Additionally, one of the things that sets MailStore Server apart from other email archiving products is that it offers an extremely fast search capability. Users love how fast the search is and we think this is one of the best features of MailStore Server.

With the addition of MailStore Server, Carbonite now offers email archiving as well as cloud and hybrid backup solutions. Why would a company need both email archiving and backup?

For example, with Carbonite Server Backup, we could take not only your Microsoft Exchange Server, but also your archive and create a copy of that so that if your office has a disaster, you can recover both your email server and your archive.

Now that the acquisition is complete, what’s next for MailStore?
Wey: I think the biggest thing is greater integration with Carbonite. I mean we think this was a great acquisition for Carbonite and we think that our small-to-midsize business customers could all use an easy-to-use and affordable email archiving solution with superior search capabilities. Seamless integration between how you purchase and how you use Carbonite and MailStore products is what’s next on the roadmap.
